Layperson Summary:

Schools may be able to do more to help children with autism fit in with their peers when they are mainstreamed.

This study was designed to capture the views of 20 students with high-functioning autism and Asperger syndrome (referred to here as autism). The study was done in four schools in the United Kingdom. Many times the students spoke and wrote about the challenges of being mainstreamed at school. The students described how many of their distinct needs were not being met. The authors suggested that a larger study be done to further describe the distinct needs and learn how best to meet those needs.
