Children with autism can learn to read and speak by watching other children learn to read and speak.
The authors found that children with autism learned to identify pictures more quickly than they learned to speak. While the children in the study did learn by watching, they learned faster if they were taught. The authors suggest that a child with autism may learn even more quickly by watching another child with autism read and speak. The authors recommend that teachers teach a small group of children so that all children have a chance to learn by being taught and learn by watching. The authors suspect that the teacher's praise for learning may also help the children want to learn.
