Research: Outcome of Early Intervention for Children with Autism

Authored by Smith, T. in Clinical Psychology: Science and Practice, Volume 6, Issue 1, p. 33, (1999).

Article summary (posted Nov 20, 2006):

Early intervention can dramatically improve the lives of some children with autism. This article reviewed nine published studies on early intervention for children with autism. The author concluded that most of these studies were poorly designed and did not include reliable assessments of the child'?s progress. Nonetheless, the author determined that the UCLA behavior analytic program run by Lovaas had the most favorable results. In this treatment program, therapists simplify the children'??s environment in order to improve success and decrease failure.
