Parental Reports on the Use of Treatments and Therapies for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Layperson Summary:

Some of the most popular therapies for children with autism are gluten-free diet, casein-free diet, speech therapy, and antidepressant drugs.

This survey was used to see what treatments are being used for children with autism. The authors did this because parents have many therapy options and most parents have trouble choosing which treatment is likely to help. The authors found that young children with autism tend to get more diet therapies and behavioral/educational/alternative treatments than older children. The authors also note that some treatments require only a little bit of parent time (TEACCH) whereas other therapies require a great deal of parent time (Floor Time). Either way, all of the many therapies used for children with autism take a great toll on parents in terms of dollar cost and time.
