Early intervention may improve many of the symptoms of autism.
This study looked at the effects of early intervention and parent stress on outcomes of children with autism. The authors found that early (2.6 - 4.0 years old) teaching intervention helped with IQ, behavior, and social skills. The more time spent on the child, the greater the outcome. If the parents were stressed, however, the gains were not as large. Parent stress did not seem to affect IQ, but it did affect education and behavior. The authors suggest that early intervention programs be designed to decrease parent stress.
