Pharmaceutical Treatment Studies in Autism and ADHD: A Design Based Review of Study Quality

Source:

Journal of Pediatric Neurology, Volume 5, p.189-197 (2007)

Layperson Summary:

Research on drug therapy for children with autism is not complete and drug therapy should be used with caution.

Using drug therapy in children requires the doctor to balance out the need to treat symptoms that affect the child's quality of life against the need to avoid long-term risk from the drug therapy. This review article looked at drug therapy for children with autism. The authors conclude that many of the drug therapy studies were not well done. The authors only looked at studies that had more than 10 children in the study. They found that of the 269 studies (autism studies and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder studies), over a third had fewer than 30 children in the study.
