Layperson Summary:

This article describes how doctors can work with teachers and children to create a treatment approach that is unique to each child with autism.

Children with autism can vary quite a bit. Children may also have varied medical conditions that underlie or go along with the autism. Therefore most children with autism are seen by both a primary care physician and specialists (developmental pediatricians, neurologists, child psychiatrists, and geneticists). The medical team should be able to provide the biomedical point of view of the child's autism. Children with autism are also often followed by a speech therapist who should be included in the team.
