The Ziggurat Model and the Comprehensive Autism Planning System (CAPS) can be used to design a program for a student with autism that meets student goals, meets state standards, and supports educational benchmarks.
When children with autism enter school it is important to have a thorough understanding of their needs. The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) law makes it important for schools to have students do better through science-based teaching programs. This means that for each child with autism there should be: thorough planning, follow through, and close monitoring of student progress. This article reviews two models (Ziggurat Model and CAPS) that can be used together to plan school programs for children with autism. The premise of the Ziggurat Model is that all basic needs of children with autism must be met. CAPS looks closely at the studentâs daily schedule to see if those needs are being met.
