Risperidone in the Management of Disruptive Behavior Disorders

Layperson Summary:

This review found that risperidone is a safe and effective treatment for children with behavior problems. Disruptive behavior disorder is often diagnosed in children with autism. Disruptive behaviors include conduct disorders and oppositional-defiant disorder. All of these behavior problems can be: hard for the patient, hard for the family, and expensive to take care of. Of all of the atypical antipsychotics given as a therapy to children to treat behavior problems, risperidone is the most studied. Long-term studies have found risperidone to be safe for children.
