Article summary (posted Apr 9, 2007):

This article describes how children with autism can be taught to play by a therapist who understands the different aspects of play and sets goals to help the child achieve mature play.

Children with autism can have trouble learning how to play. The first step in play therapy is to test how good the child is at playing. Children should be watched or videotaped during a normal play time. Typical children can use their imagination to play with objects and play with other children. Pretend play is the most advanced type of play.
