Layperson Summary:

The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) can help children with autism learn to talk.

PECS therapy is meant to teach children with autism to start to speak (initiate communication). This study was designed to see whether teaching children with autism to use PECS made it easier for them to talk with their teacher. The authors found that children who had received 15 hours of advanced PECS therapy (PECS III) were better able to talk with their teachers. Not only did the children who received PECS therapy talk more to the teacher, but the children were the ones who started the talking, not the teacher. The children in the study received PECS therapy through PECS III, which meant that they were halfway through the complete PECS program.
