Layperson Summary:

Group psychotherapy may be very helpful in teaching social skills to children with autism.

This study looked to see if group psychotherapy could help with the social skills of 39 children with pervasive developmental disorder. Outcome was measured by checklists given to the psychotherapists, teachers, and parents. The study found that group psychotherapy helped the children with social skills at home and at school. The children were able to make changes in their behavior even though many of the symptoms of autism remained the same. The children seemed to become attached with their therapists and with each other.
