The Impact of Picture Exchange Communication System on Requesting and Speech Development in Preschoolers with Autism Spectrum Disorders and Similar Characteristics

Research in Autism Spectrum Disorders, Volume 2, p.157-169 (2008)

Layperson Summary:

While the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) does help children learn to communicate, it is not very good at teaching children to talk.

This study was designed to see if PECS could help children with autism learn to speak. The authors only gathered data during the PECS intervention. One of the three preschoolers in the study learned very quickly how to use PECS. By the end of the study, two of the three children learned to use PECS to communicate. None of the children learned to speak as a result of PECS therapy. The authors call for future studies to find out which children are most likely to gain from the use of PECS therapy.
