Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) can be used to help older children with autism and severe behavior problems.
This paper describes the treatment of a 12 year old boy with autism who had severe behavior problems (aggression, self-injury, dangerous). The severe behaviors were treated and his behavior has been good for two years. The authors note that one important thing about the treatment is that they made a plan such that severe behaviors did not result in the boy being allowed to leave school or social situations. It was also important to have someone with the boy every day. This person had to be able to carry out the complex treatment program. This meant that one of two behavior analysts worked with the child all of the time.
