Layperson Summary:

The hormone oxytocin may be a good therapy for autism.

Oxytocin and vasopressin are two hormones that are important for social behavior. Many scientists think that they may play a role in autism. For example, one study found that children with autism have lower blood levels of oxytocin. Some scientists think that children with autism respond to oxytocin and vasopressin differently than other children. Changes in genes for oxytocin and vasopressin have been found to add to risk for autism. Research is underway to develop an oxytocin-based treatment for autism.
