Layperson Summary:

Melatonin therapy may improve the sleep and set the inner clock of children with autism.

This paper reviews the issue of sleep and brain chemicals in people with autism. Many children with autism have sleep problems and low levels of the sleep chemical melatonin. The brain chemical serotonin is used to make melatonin. It may be that people with autism do not do a good job of using serotonin to make melatonin. This would explain the high levels of serotonin that are also seen in people with autism. Two good studies have shown that melatonin therapy may help children with autism sleep better.
