The Rapidly Expanding Field of Autism Research

Layperson Summary:

Studies of autism treatments should include tests that can give a good reading as to whether or not the treatment is truly helping children with autism to function better.

This editorial begins a volume of the journal that includes 16 reports on different aspects of autism. The authors note that since there are no drugs to treat autism, therapies must focus on common symptoms of autism. For example, risperidone has been shown to help with severe bad behavior and autism. Children treated with risperidone, however, have high levels of the hormone prolactin. Research needs to be done to find out if the high level of prolactin can hurt the child.
