Young children with autism may benefit from being exposed to new things, even if those things are stressful.
The authors of this paper discuss whether repetitive behavior and mental inflexibility may be the basic cause of autism. They suggest that the inflexibility means that the child cannot adapt to the randomness of the world around him. In addition, this means that the child cannot form an organized understanding of the world. Finally, the lack of language reinforces the lack of understanding by leaving the children with autism alone in the world. The authors conclude by suggesting that therapy should regularly take young children outside of their "comfort zone" and show them many different things and many different routines.
