School-based speech therapists may need more training in autism.
This paper reports on a survey given to school-based speech therapists. The survey found that some speech therapists do not really know what autism is or how it is diagnosed. This may be because many speech therapists received their degrees before autism was commonly diagnosed. The authors believe that speech therapists who have not received university training in autism should receive extra training on how to provide speech intervention for children with autism. Autism training is offered by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and may be helpful for speech therapists.
