The Joshua School, a Colorado facility for kids with autism and other special needs, recently opened a campus in the Boulder area. The Joshua School is approved by the Colorado Board of Education and enrolls students who have had difficulty in a mainstreamed classroom environment. Each child has an individualized plan that may include a personal schedule, work with an iPad, academics, and speech skills. Teacher, Alex Stansbury explained, “My main priority is that they're happy and want to be here. Without that, nothing else can happen."

WOWTChannel 6 in Omaha and Heartland Equine Therapeutic Riding Academy (HETRA) have combined resources to provide 16 therapy horses for kids with autism and other special needs. Studies have found that the horse's motion is like that of a child's, so that riding a horse increases muscle tone, coordination, and balance for riders. HETRA is a non-profit equine therapy center that has been in business since 1989; it benefits from donations and community volunteers.

The Natalie Fink Acquisition Academy (NFAA) will open to provide applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for students with autism in the fall of 2013. NFAA will offer one-on-one teacher/student ratio for kids aged 5 to 10. Christina Fink, CEO of NFAA, explained, “Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) is a proven approach to treating/educating children with autism.” NFAA hopes to provide better therapies than kids might receive at a public school, while keeping costs below those of private ABA facilities. NFAA is actively fundraising and looking for a safe neighborhood for the academy.

Precision Training is being offered as therapy for autism at Queen’s University Belfast, Centre for Behaviour Analysis. Researchers believe that Precision Training may help kids with autism improve academic skills. Precision Training, developed in the 1960s by Ogden Lindsley, is a type of programmed instruction that focuses on how to behave, how often, how fast, and for how long.
