Clonidine may help with sleep and mood problems in children with autism.

Clonidine acts on the brainstem and decreases heart rate and blood pressure. Clonidine also seems to help with sleep problems and behavior problems such as aggression, mood problems, and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). More and more doctors are giving clonidine to children. This open label study was designed to see if the drug clonidine was able to help with sleep and behavior problems in 19 children with autism. The study results were based largely on parent reports. Read more...

Drug therapy may help with problem behaviors that can be associated with autism.

This review article describes the use of a type of drug known as atypical antipsychotics as a treatment for children with autism, and reports on whether or not these drugs work. Atypical antipsychotics are often used as a first-line therapy to treat problem behaviors in children with autism. Problem behaviors such as aggression and self-injury and tantrums can often get in a way of a childâ??s schooling. Atypical antipsychotics include clozapine, risperidone, olanzapine, quetiapine, ziprasidone, and aripiprazole. Risperidone is the only drug that is FDA-approved for use with autism. Read more...

Teachers seem to be able to limit problem behaviors at school by using many different interventions.

Children with autism may show aggression, self-injury and be unable to follow rules. This article reviewed the published studies on interventions for children with autism spectrum disorder in order to decrease problem behaviors at school. The study found 73% of the time the chosen intervention was said to have worked. The interventions worked whether or not the teacher matched the intervention to the child. Teachers seem to be very able to perform the intervention and to measure results for research studies. Read more...

Five drugs have been shown to help with aggression in children with autism: tianeptine, methylphenidate, risperidone, clonidine, and naltrexone.

This review article describes studies on the use of drug therapy used to treat aggression in children with autism. The best research supports the use of risperidone and methylphenidate to treat symptoms of aggression in children with autism. The authors believe that future research should look to see if a class of drugs known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors can also help treat aggression. In all cases the authors suggest that studies start with a low dosage of drug and slowly increase the amount of drug. The authors also suggest that all future studies of autism look to see if the drug is able to help with aggression.
