Since autism is becoming more common, nurses need to know about the different therapies that are used.

This short paper reviews some of the basic therapies for autism so that nurses are more aware of the disease. It describes for nurses how both drug therapies and non-drug therapies are used. Some studies have shown that diets such as the gluten-free diet or casein-free diet can help children with autism. While there is no cure for autism, drug therapy is used to help with aggression, self-injury, and hyperactivity that may come with autism. This review article describes drug therapies for children with autism and bipolar disorder. About 20% of children with autism also have bipolar disorder. Many symptoms of autism and bipolar disorder are the same: aggression, irritability, easily distracted, etc. Most doctors suggest a mixture of drug therapy and behavioral therapy such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) for children who have both autism and bipolar disorder. Buspirone may help with the aggressive behavior of some people with autism.

Some people with autism have problem behaviors that include temper tantrums, aggression, and hurting themselves. There are many different drugs that are used to help with these behaviors. This case report describes the use of the drug buspirone to treat a 33-year-old woman with autism and aggressive behavior. She did not have any major side effects with the buspirone and it helped with the aggression towards herself and others.
