Drug therapy can be used to treat aggression and self injury in people with autism.

Studies have shown that people with autism differ from other people in the level of several important brain chemicals. This review article describes the use of a type of drug therapy (antipsychotics) to treat autism. Most drug studies have only looked at people who have just autism (as opposed to autism and another issue or Asperger syndrome). Both haloperidol and risperidone have been useful in treating symptoms of autism. They do not have any effect on the core symptoms of autism, however. Read more...

A recent study found that risperidone can be a safe and effective therapy for bad behavior in children with autism.

This can include tantrums, aggression and self-injury. The large study was done by the Research Units on Pediatric Psychopharmacology (RUPP) Autism Network. In the first part of the study 101 children were given risperidone or placebo for eight weeks. The study then went for four more months, during which time the researchers found that the effect of the drug lasted for many months.
