Risperidone therapy may help children with Asperger Syndrome (AS) who are aggressive.

There currently aren't any drugs that can be used specifically to treat Asperger Syndrome (AS). Children with AS often have other medical issues, however, such as Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, bipolar disorder, and anxiety. These other medical issues can be treated with drugs. Behavioral treatment programs can be used with children with AS to help children understand emotions, understand someone elseâ??s perspective (theory of mind) and solve problems. It is important for families to learn about AS so that they can help their child.

While olanzapine may help children with autism, it also places them at risk for gaining a large amount of weight.

Atypical antipsychotics have fewer side effects than older antipsychotics. Since there is no medical cure for autism, atypical antipsychotics are sometimes used to help certain symptoms of autism. This study was designed to see whether the atypical antipsychotic olanzapine would help pervasive developmental disorder (PDD) and decrease impulsive and aggressive actions. Half of the children tested showed significant improvements in symptoms of autism. The authors note that the study was only eight weeks long.

Aripiprazole may help disruptive behavior in children with autism, but it can also cause significant weight gain.

Earlier studies have found that atypical antipsychotics such as Risperdal can help treat autism. A small study has also found that 12 mg/day of the atypical antipsychotic aripiprazole can help with aggression, self-injurious behavior, and hyperactivity in children with autism. This study of 32 children looked at whether aripiprazole is safe and effective in children with developmental disabilities including autism. The study found that about half of the children given aripiprazole were better behaved. It also found that weight gain was a serious problem, especially for younger children treated with aripiprazole.

Galantamine may help with aggressive behavior in children with autism.

Many parents turn to drugs in order to help their children manage aggression and agitation associated with autism. This study was designed to see whether galantamine is safe and effective in children with autism. The study was a prospective, open-label trial of 13 medication-free children. While galantamine did not help hyperactivity, it did help by decreasing interfering behaviors and it did help the children to pay attention. The children did not experience any major side effects while on galantamine. Galantamine is primarily used to treat Alzheimer’s disease. Read more...
