Risperidone may be effective in improving angry, aggressive, and self-injurious behavior in children with pervasive developmental disorders (PDD).

Risperidone is classified as an atypical antipsychotic and it has been studied a great deal in children with disruptive behavior disorders (DBD). It is diagnosed in children and adolescents with and without autism. DBDs include conduct disorder and oppositional-defiant disorder. DBDs can be quite difficult personally, economically, and socially; parents frequently search for treatment options. Risperidone improves social responsiveness and decreases hyperactivity and aggression in some children with autism.

Risperidone was originally identified as a medication to treat adult schizophrenia. This current study examined a group of 40 children between the ages of 2-9 who were given either risperidone (1 mg/day) or placebo. Fifty seven percent of the children receiving risperidone showed improvement in social responsiveness as well as overall functioning. Eighteen percent of children showed an improvement in aggressive behavior and hyperactivity. Risperidone therapy did not improve speech.

Low doses of risperidone can effectively treat aggression in individuals with mental retardation and autism.

This study lasted 46 weeks and included 40 children, adolescents, and adults with various levels of mental retardation and autism. Low doses of risperidone (1 mg/day for children and adolescents and 2 mg/day for adults) were just as effective as high doses and had fewer side effects. Children tended to be more irritable when given risperidone, than were adolescents and adults. The most significant side effects were increased appetite, weight gain, and drowsiness.
