Opportunity Works in Massachusetts recently purchased a Vecta Distraction Station, which is a mobile sensory integration machine. The occupational therapists who work with persons with autism and other sensory integration disorders say that the self-contained machine engages people and stimulates their senses. The Vecta Distraction Station consists of "a soothing fiber-optic color display, calming bubble columns, aromatherapy, vibrations, a mirror, music and a projector to display moving images onto a wall - all activities that awaken four of the five senses: sight, touch, smell and hearing."

A Snoezelen room at the Providence Center for Medically Fragile Children in Oregon is helping children with autism and other developmental disorders with sensory issues. Snoezelen rooms were developed in the Netherlands, but are becoming more popular in the U.S. These rooms provide sensory stimulation and relaxation in the form of light, music, and textures. The "slide projectors, black lights, mirrors, disco balls, stereos, colored bubble tubes, flashing lights, aromatherapy machines" are used based on an individual's likes and dislikes - the focus is on a child's comfort. At the Providence Center where children reside, the Snoezelen room is a place where families can interact; parents can learn to operate the room and enjoy quality time with their child.

While the name-brand therapy equipment may cost thousands, schools in Nova Scotia are outfitting "Snoezelen" rooms creatively and inexpensively.

Snoezelen rooms -- from the Dutch words for exploring and dozing -- are "groovy and mesmerizing." These are rooms filled with multisensory equipment such as beanbag chairs, balls, mirrors, drums, and aromatherapy devices. However, the Snoezelen equipment is well out of the price range of many schools who are making do with big box store items.
