Speech pathologists in Douglas County Oregon, say that speech pathology and speech therapy is much more than just articulation. As they work with children with autism and other developmental delays, the speech pathologists stress communication as the most important goal. Interventions include oral motor exercises, sign language, augmentative tools (AAC), and picture symbols (PECS). One of the therapists summed up the district-wide speech program: "All these kids just want to fit in....And that's what we do. We give them the words, the language, the skills to do that."

Susan Nachimson is a speech therapist in California who uses aquatic therapy to increase speech and communication skills in children with autism and other developmental delays. Her practice, AquaSLP.com, focuses on warm pool water's buoyancy to increase movement of the entire body including the vocal areas. "The water also serves to support the head for better positioning to provide trunk, neck, jaw, tongue support for more intelligible articulation." One of the specific interventions Nachimson uses is called WATSU or water shiatsu, which is a hands-on massage technique.

Marshall University Speech and Hearing Clinic in West Virginia provides speech and language therapy for children with autism regardless of their parent's ability to pay. The speech pathologists provide intervention for speech and hearing problems, language, articulation, and feeding issues. In addition to providing therapy, the speech and hearing clinic trains future speech pathologists who provide most of the interventions.
