Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may help reduce anxiety in children with high-functioning autism.

This study looked to see if CBT could help children (average age 11) with autism. The study found that CBT did reduce parent stress. It also found that CBT tended to decrease social fears and obsession-compulsion in the children. The children said that they were less anxious after the 16 CBT sessions. The authors suggest that CBT may be quite useful for children with high-functioning autism in Asian cultures.

Treatment and Education of Autistic and related Communication Handicapped Children (TEACCH) is an effective therapy in Asian cultures as well as western cultures.

The TEACCH model was developed in North Carolina in the 1970s. It has been shown to help children who have autism with their learning and behavior. This study was designed to test whether the TEACCH program would also be an effective therapy for children with autism who live in Hong Kong. The study was small and had only 18 children aged 3-5. The authors found that TEACCH therapy was able to help Chinese children with autism in many areas, but not with language.
