Many people with autism suffer from anxiety. Children with Asperger's syndrome are even more likely to have anxiety than children with autism. Adults with autism often have increased stress, anxiety, panic attacks and fear of crowds. This review article describes the diagnosis and treatment of anxiety in people with autism and other developmental disabilities. LEGO therapy may help with social skills and behavior.

This study was designed to test whether LEGO therapy and the Social Use of Language Programme (SLUP) work in social skill groups for 6-11 year olds with high functioning autism and Asperger syndrome. Social problems were reduced after 18 weeks of LEGO therapy, but did not reduce after SLUP therapy. Both LEGO therapy and SLUP therapy groups showed decreased bad behavior. Ant farms may be a useful tool for helping people with Asperger syndrome learn about social structure.

This article is a case study of two people with Asperger syndrome who were given a treatment program of animal therapy combined with psychotherapy. At the start of the study, neither patient knew how to relate to others. One patient was a man who came from a strong and noisy family. One patient was an eight-year-old boy who came from a quiet family. Ants were helpful to both of them as a symbol and concrete presence to move psychotherapy treatment forward. Read more...
