Omega-3/omega-6 fatty acid supplements may help children with autism and/or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). This article describes a randomized, placebo-controlled study of 75 children and adolescents (8-18 years old) diagnosed with ADHD. Children had ADHD symptoms including poor concentration (attention deficit) and/or hyperactivity. Some of the children had other symptoms in addition to ADHD, including Asperger's and autism-like symptoms. The authors described the autism-like symptoms as deficits in motor control and perception.... Read more...

Paying attention to early warning signals before a problem behavior in children with autism may help prevent it.

Three children with autism (6-18 years old) were getting behavioral therapy (ABA). The children had a pattern of certain harmless behaviors (called precursor behaviors) before a more severe problem behavior. For example, one child would squeal (precursor behavior) before biting or scratching herself or others (problem behavior). The problem behaviors happened less often when therapists made some changes. If the precursor behavior was rewarded or the therapist encouraged the child to communicate right after the precursor behavior, then the child had fewer problem behaviors. Read more...

The authors described how two parents successfully learned skills for teaching their 4-year-old children with autism. The parents taught attending (focusing attention), ball/toy play, and verbal imitation. Training sessions lasted 2 hours and the parent and child worked together for 6-9 sessions.... Read more...

Children with autism who were more social had faster growth in speech and language skills during childhood than other children with autism.

The authors tested language skills in 28 children with autism (2-5 years old) during a 4 year period. They also tested how well the children paid attention to others who tried to get their attention (child responsiveness), and how well parents responded to their children when their children asked for attention during play (parent responsiveness). Children with greater child and/or parent responsiveness had better language skills during childhood. The authors could not determine for sure whether parent responsiveness was the reason for the better speech skills, or whether something else related to parent responsiveness was important.
