Weighted vests used as part of sensory integration therapy may not work for all children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD). This review article examined seven studies using weighted vests on children between the ages of 2-11 years old. Five of the seven studies reported some improvements in behavior of children with ASDWeighted vests seemed to reduce stereotypic (repetitive) behaviors in some of the children. The vests increased attention or on-task time for some children. However, these were small studies and could not measure behaviors reliably. Therefore, the use of weighted vests in sensory integration therapy, in general, may not lead to consistent benefits for children with ASD.

Intervention that addresses the core communication problems in autism at an early age may promote social and communication skills.

Autism is often diagnosed when children are young and there is a high burden of care for the families of the child with autism. This paper describes the first large scale trial of a social communication intervention approach for preschool children. The intervention promotes parent-child communication in areas such as looking at the same thing (joint attention), starting a conversation, and reading non-verbal signals. The authors believe that if these skills can be taught to a child with autism at a young age then language skills will come in as the child ages. The trial has started, but the results are not yet in. Read more...

Remote-controlled toys may be a useful tool when teaching children with autism to follow an adult's gaze.

This group of three case studies describes a way of teaching children to follow an adult's gaze. The authors used delayed cue training to teach all three four-year-old boys to shift gaze to a remote-controlled toy. The gaze following in some cases was followed by joint attention with the adult and in some cases not. The authors did not compare delayed cue training to other prompting types of therapy. The children continued to follow the adult's gaze even if the authors stopped turning the toy on. Read more...

Neurofeedback may help children with autism think more clearly and have improved social behavior.

This study was designed to see if neurofeedback therapy could help children with autism think more clearly and do a better job with thinking tasks. The treatment was first designed for children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and used in this study to treat seven children with autism. Five of the children showed reduced theta power and increased low beta power in their brains after neurofeedback therapy. The authors suggest that these changes in brain waves may also be changing the structure of the brain. The children were also better at doing a wide range of tasks. Read more...
