Some applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapists may also use autism therapies that are not evidence-based.

This study was designed to see what treatments for autism are endorsed and used by ABA therapists. While most ABA therapists did provide ABA therapy, not all ABA therapists use only evidence-based autism therapies. ABA therapists reported using facilitated communication, sensory integration, auditory integration, and other interventions that are not evidence-based. The choice of therapies was not influenced by the number of years that the ABA therapist had been working with children with autism. The authors suggest that the current approach to teaching Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBA) about evidenced-based therapies may not be not good enough. Read more...

Therapy for children with autism may be more successful if it is designed with an understanding of how children with autism process sounds.

This article reviews recent research in the area of how people with autism process sounds. Some scientists believe that troubles in processing sound are so common in people with autism that it should be part of the list of symptoms used to diagnose autism. This problem with sounds can also be seen with tests that look at the brainstem and other parts of the brain that process sounds. Differences between the brains people with autism and control groups are most obvious when looking at how the brain responds to a human voice. The author believes that these differences can get in the way of some autism therapies. Read more...

These include computer software, audio and video recorders, virtual reality, and robots. These technologies can do many things, one of which is to provide a way to teach skills using computer software and virtual reality. The author believes that money spent in researching and creating technology tools would be money well spent. Read more...

FM auditory trainers may be able to help children with autism process sounds and learn to speak.

This case study describes a child with autism who improved his word productions and some of his social behavior skills by using an FM auditory trainer and watching videos of his parents. The authors believe that these results agree with the theory that people with autism have trouble processing sound and faces at the same time. They believe that such a program could be done simply in the home. They are now testing this approach with a larger group of children. Read more...
