Motor problems in children with autism are often ignored.

Most experts do not see children with autism as having motor problems. This study was designed to see to what extent children with autism also have motor problems. The 154 children in the study were at The Autism Center in New Jersey. About 10% of children in the study had gross motor delay. Motor problems were more common in younger children and tended to decrease as children aged.

One for Autism in San Antonio, Texas offers many therapies for autism that together help children make a great deal of progress.

This article describes an autism center called "One for Autism" that serves 180 children. The center is based on seven pillars: Passion + Hope + Support + Faith + Opportunity + Belief + Teamwork = Success. The center is run by Olga Vasquez-Silva and provides many one-on-one therapies such as behavioral therapy (Applied Behavior Analysis), occupational therapy, and speech therapy. The center targets the behaviors first so that the children are then able to learn. Thus, One for Autism is a one-stop center that makes life easier for families with autism.


The Kae Martin Campus in Ontario is the first of its kind in Canada to combine education, life skills, and research for children with autism. The Campus hopes to begin taking its first students in 2013 and will begin with 520 students. They hope to work closely with the autism research that is currently being done at York University. Currently kids on the spectrum are receiving applied behavior analysis (ABA) and other therapies at the New Haven Learning Center, started by parents talking about how best to educate their kids.

Stella Spanakos, mom of a son with autism, has launched two new centers in the Port Washington area. Nicholas Center for Autism, named for her son, is a facility that focuses on life skills for people with autism. Clients learn improved communication and job training. Spectrum Designs is an offshoot of the Center and provides employment for people with autism as well as custom-made apparel, accessories, and special event favors all created by people with autism. Spanakos and her co-founder Nicole Sugrue are convinced that parents want the best opportunities for their children with autism. She and Sugrue hope that both the Center and Spectrum Designs will fill that need.

The Rocky Mountain Autism Center (RMAC) has moved to a new larger space in Lone Tree, CO. Dr. Pat Rydell, the director believes that children with autism can grow into socially integrated adults. RMAC focuses on increasing cognitive flexibility; they prompt kids to interact with each other and with the larger world outside the center. In addition to one-on-one therapy, RMAC includes the entire family in therapy and the center contains large rooms to accommodate family interaction. In addition, RMAC encourages families to continue therapy at home to achieve maximum results.

Twin girls, diagnosed with autism, had their parents and applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy for support. But the Halls, after moving to the Kirkland WA area, had problems finding local resources for their daughters. They have started a non-profit autism center, Olympic Peninsula Autism Center, that they hope will benefit all families in the area. The center will include water activities, physical activities, and a kitchen in which to teach some safety life skills. In addition, there are once-a-month parent support group meetings.
