Autism Therapy: biomedical

definition of biomedical: Use of knowledge of biology and biochemistry to improve human health in clinical medicine. In the context of autism therapy, it involves looking for and correcting underling biological causes of behaviors.

British Journal of General Practice, by Fitzpatrick, M., published in 2009, summarized Aug 3, 2009

Scientific studies may be a useful tool in guiding parents to choose autism therapies that are likely to help the child and not hurt the child.

In this essay, the author described a day spent at a biomedical conference in England. The conference offered information about autism therapy. The author was upset because the therapies discussed at the conference had not been proven to work by scientific research studies. He also noted that there were no medical doctors practicing in the British National Health Service who gave talks at the conference. The author felt the atmosphere of the conference did not leave room for input from established doctors. The author said that, ideally, parents would choose therapies that have been shown scientifically to have a strong chance of helping the child and had few side effects or risks. In contrast to this, some children may be asked to go through testing and therapies that are hard on the child and have a low chance of success. Or worse, the children may be at risk for health problems from therapies that he believes are more risky, such as chelation therapy. The author also urged doctors to be cautious about prescribing therapy options that are not based on sound scientific research.

Neurochem Res, by Geier, DA, Kern JK, Garver CR, Adams JB, Audhya T., and Geier MR, published in 2009, summarized Mar 5, 2009

Therapies that boost metabolism may help children with autism.

This study was designed to see if children with autism have problems with one of their energy pathways (transsulfuration pathway). The authors found that children with autism had markers in their blood that would be found if the children had a problem in their transsulfuration pathway. The authors are concerned that a weak transsulfuration pathway may cause problems with cell function and the turning on of genes. The result would be children who are easily sick and may have a worse response to environmental chemicals than other children. The lab test that the authors used can be obtained from Vitamin Diagnostics.

SA Journal of Child Health, by Moolman_Smook, JC, Vermoter CL, Buckle J., and Lindenber L., published in 2008, summarized Jan 23, 2009

Autism may be treatable with early medical/biomedical and behavioral intervention.

This review article is written for doctors and describes some basic autism therapy options. The authors note that the treatment approach should be tailored to each child. Intervention should be started as early as possible in order to increase IQ, improve social skills, and decrease behavior problems. Children with autism can often be helped by biomedical intervention such as diets, vitamins, and other supplements. The parents of the child with autism should also receive help because they are at a high risk for anxiety and depression.

The Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, by Patel, K., and Curtis LT, published in 2007, summarized Apr 3, 2008

Biomedical treatments can be helpful for children with autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The authors believe that any good intervention program for autism will involve many different treatment approaches. Often, the treatment program will include improved diet and vitamin supplements. This small study (10 children) was designed to look at the effects of a mixture of therapies (including biomedical treatments) to help children with a combined diagnosis of autism and ADHD. All patients in this study had high levels of lead in the urine. After 3-6 months in the study, all 10 children had lower levels of lead in the urine and their autism and ADHD symptoms were improved.

KL Biomed is a biomedical- and holistic-based support network for families dealing with autism spectrum disorder. This Malaysian group focuses on complementary and alternative treatments (CAM) for autism as well as empowering families to research what works best for their children. While KL Biomed advocates checking with a DAN doctor before beginning treatment, some of the therapies they promote include: naturopathy, homeopathy, HBOT, cranial-sacral therapy, neurofeedback, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and dietary supplements. KL Biomed runs an online forum where parents can share information on what is working for their children. KL Biomed's belief is that relying on the collective knowledge of a lot of parents is better than using just one source for treatment information.

The Child Early Intervention Medical Centre (CEIMC) at the Dubai Health Care City hopes to help parents with early diagnosis of their child’s autism. CEIMC uses biomedical testing as well as applied behavior analysis (ABA) in diagnosing and treating children. They are focused on working with the children and their parents at the center as well as training the parents to work at home with their kids. CEIMC recently added Child Learning and Enrichment Centre to their offerings. The learning and enrichment center uses psychiatrists, psychologists, speech therapists, and occupational therapists to prepare school-aged children to mainstream.

Ruth Olurounbi, a reporter in Nigeria, provides a broad overview of autism and autism therapies currently being used. She explains symptoms and diagnostic tools. Olurounbi discusses a number of treatments that have proved successful including “auditory training, discrete trial training, vitamin therapy, anti-yeast therapy, facilitated communication, music therapy, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and sensory integration.” For the sake of categorization, she divides these therapies into three major groupings: behavioral and communiation, biomedical and dietary, and complementary.

The first phase of Alabama's Spectrum Center for children with autism has recently opened and already plans are in place for phase 2. Right now, the center is able to offer applied behavior analysis (ABA) and speech therapies. Their goal is a 50,000 square foot facility that offers parent support, a resource library, and diagnostic and biomedical areas. Spectrum Center is the brain-child and hard work of Dr. Claude Ashley, a pediatrician with Southeastern Pediatric Associates in Dothan AL, who has a son with autism.

Impressions of site

May 2, 2007 by Anonymous

I would like to say that I love this site.  I am an Autism Certificate student and a Behavioral Therapist and I thought the therapies and treatments discussed on the site were very comprehensive and unbiased.  It's very difficult to find an unbiased, straight forward website in the autism community.

Because I am an ABA therapist, I payed most attention to that aspect.  I really liked how the hours, costs and data were presented.  The only thing I didn't see were sources.   I also am a believer in the biomedical treatments out there for children with autism.  For the most part, the diets and supplements recommended are not harmful and would only benefit the child.  But because autism is a SPECTRUM disorder, not every treatment is going to work for every child, but it's worth a try!

All around, I really liked the site and thought it was very comprehensive and a very good resource for parents and caregivers.

Biomedical Treatments

My daughter has improved enormously on a specific protocol of supplements, detoxification, and gf/cf, soy free, glutamate free, low sugar diet. It is not idiopathic as she regressed after 165 mcg of thimerosal. She is now being treated for toxic encephalopathy, gut dysbiosis, an inability to excrete heavy metals, immune dysfunction, and food intolerances.

I see nothing on this site about many autistic children having immune and gut dysfunction, nor any studies about inflammation at all.
