The top five autism therapies used in the Georgia public schools are: Gentle Teaching, sensory integration, cognitive behavioral modification, assistive technology, and Social Stories.

This article reports the results of a survey performed to find out the types of treatments, therapies, and interventions used by teachers working with students with autism in Georgia's public schools. The therapies differed by grade level and classroom type. The authors found that fewer than 10% of the therapies used with students with autism in Georgia public schools are based on scientific evidence. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) may help reduce anxiety in children with high-functioning autism.

This study looked to see if CBT could help children (average age 11) with autism. The study found that CBT did reduce parent stress. It also found that CBT tended to decrease social fears and obsession-compulsion in the children. The children said that they were less anxious after the 16 CBT sessions. The authors suggest that CBT may be quite useful for children with high-functioning autism in Asian cultures. Read more...

Six weeks of cognitive behavior therapy may help children with Asperger Syndrome learn to manage their anger.

It also looked to see if the 45 children would be able to take what they learned in therapy and apply it to the real world (generalization). The study measured success by looking at whether or not the child was able to give advice to a comic book person who was being teased. The study also looked at whether or not the parents thought that the child was doing a better job handling anger. Both the comic book test and the parent reports showed that the child had learned to manage anger better. Read more...

Cognitive behavior therapy can be used to treat anxiety in high-functioning children with autism.

This study was designed to see if 12 weekly group sessions of psychotherapy (cognitive behavior therapy) could help with anxiety in high-functioning children with autism. This is the first such study and it found that cognitive behavior therapy was able to help treat children with autism for anxiety. Many psychologists would not think to try cognitive behavior therapy on children with autism. This study would support the idea that children with high-functioning autism know their own thoughts. The authors wonder if a more simple type of cognitive behavior therapy may be able to help lower-functioning children with autism who may also have anxiety. Read more...
