Acupuncture may help language development in children with autism.

This study was designed to see if acupuncture combined with speech therapy could help children with autism learn to speak better. The acupuncture was performed by a therapist who was trained to work with children. The twice-weekly acupuncture was easy to do and it was safe. The therapist used only scalp acupuncture. The children who received both acupuncture and speech therapy did better on the speech test than those who received only speech therapy. Read more...

Biomedical treatments can be helpful for children with autism and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The authors believe that any good intervention program for autism will involve many different treatment approaches. Often, the treatment program will include improved diet and vitamin supplements. This small study (10 children) was designed to look at the effects of a mixture of therapies (including biomedical treatments) to help children with a combined diagnosis of autism and ADHD. All patients in this study had high levels of lead in the urine. After 3-6 months in the study, all 10 children had lower levels of lead in the urine and their autism and ADHD symptoms were improved. Many studies have been done that suggest that changing diet and giving supplements may help in the treatment of autism.

About 40-80% of children with autism also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Behavior therapies such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy and drug therapy can both be useful interventions in the treatment of autism and/or ADHD. This review article reviewed scientific studies on the role of nutrition and environment in the treatment of autism and ADHD. About 74% of parents use some type of CAM therapy as a treatment for their child with autism. This review article describes the complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) therapies used to treat autism. Many therapies target the gut problems that are very common in children with autism. GI problems are a very real issue and, of all of the children with gut symptoms and autism, 69.7% had acid reflux (reflux esophagitis), 42% had constant stomach pain (chronic gastritis) and 67% had stomach bleeding (chronic duodenitis)....
