Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the best researched of all autism therapies and studies have shown that it may help children with autism.

There is a lot of research to support the use of early and intense intervention for children with autism. One thing that early intervention may help with is to teach children with autism to think in abstract ways. It can also help to teach basic skills such as how to communicate and how to function. This review article describes ABA therapy and the Lovaas method as it is used to treat children with autism. The author concludes that the current research shows that the Lovaas method and discrete trial training can help children with autism. Read more...

It may be helpful for teachers to slowly decrease prompting when working with students with autism who receive applied behavior analysis (ABA).

This study was designed to see which of two approaches (constant time delay or flexible prompt fading) work best when teaching skills to children with autism. The study had five elementary aged students who received at least 10 hours of ABA therapy per week. The study found that both approaches worked for the students, but that teachers preferred to use flexible prompt fading. The authors noted that they could not be certain that the teachers were doing each procedure the right way. The authors cautioned that future research should look to see which of these procedures might cause children to rely upon the prompt. Read more...

States would save money if they shifted their special education funding to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy for young children with autism.

This paper was designed to see how much the state of Texas would save if it were to pay for three years Discrete Trial Training (a type of ABA therapy) intervention for every child with autism. They conclude that Texas could save over two billion dollars in special education costs if they paid for Discrete Trial Training. The authors limited their study to savings on special education costs. They suggest that there will be even more savings when these students become adults. The authors conclude that a simple change of policy in the state of Texas can improve the quality of lives of many children with autism and save money. Read more...

A computer program may soon make it easier to find a discrete trial training (DTT) tutor for children with autism.

This paper tested whether or not a computer program (DTkid) was able to teach people to become DTT tutors for children with autism. The authors found that DTkid was able to improve the tutors'?? knowledge of DTT. DTkid was also able to teach tutors to do a better job with DTT than people who did not get DTkid training. The tutors were able to learn from DTkid simply by watching DTkid in playback mode. The authors hope to be able to include DTkid in a larger training program that will make it easier and faster to train people to be good DTT tutors. Read more...
