Parents can work with health care providers to make sure that their children get the therapies that they need.

In February 2003, Wisconsin cut its budget and stopped the autism in-home program. This Lovaas program was being used by 1,007 children at the time. Nurses and parents and politicians worked together to restore funding for the in-home program. The Lovaas program is a type of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) that has been shown to help children with autism. The Lovaas program teaches children with autism life skills by breaking them down into tiny steps (discrete trials) for eight hours per day for five to seven days per week. Other helpful programs include parent education, support, early intervention, school-based education, behavior management, and medical treatment. Read more...

Parents need to look carefully to make sure that their children are receiving true Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy from public schools.

Many public schools use an autism-specific ABA program. These programs may be called ABA, but the teachers really only spend 45 minutes per day doing ABA. This is much less than the 25-40 hours per week of ABA therapy that should make up a real ABA program. The authors wrote this article to define ABA therapy and describe what ABA therapy should look like in the school system. The authors note that many programs that are called ABA are really just discrete trial training (DTT) and not as good for treating autism as a real ABA program. Read more...

Joint attention is when two people share a focus on interesting objects around them. Normally, between the ages of 9 and 15 months, children learn to pay attention to something pointed out to them and they learn to point an item out to someone else. This article describes three studies that were designed to test the best therapies for teaching joint attention to children with autism. The authors found that younger children (ages 1 and 2) learn best when joint attention treatment uses items that are important to the child. The authors also suggest that once a child develops joint attention, he may learn to speak more quickly. Read more...

This article reports that parents rank parent training to be the most effective intervention for parents of children with autism. Parents of 195 children with autism rated parent training, followed by speech therapy, sensory integration, separate classroom time, and discrete trial training (applied behavior analysis or ABA) as the most effective interventions for their children. Interestingly, none of these top-5 rated interventions were significantly correlated with the parentsâ?? perceptions of outcomes in seven areas (social, emotional, cognitive, etc).... Read more...
