Henry, a golden retriever, proved the key to communicating with Dale, a child with autism. Dale's parents were unable to communicate with their son, even after referral to a speech therapist in Nottingham, Scotland. Finally, a chance encounter with some dogs who didn't threaten Dale with eye contact and human interaction proved the key. Dale's parents decided on dog therapy; Henry taught Dale to accept interaction. Dale says today, "Henry did a lot for me. He taught me how to appreciate other people and understand their feelings. He had certain expressions and I could get a picture of what he was feeling."

Hope Woods Labradoodles, a family business created so that Theresa Urban's daughter with spina bifida could have a mentally and actively challenging job, has blossomed into a thriving dog therapy enterprise. Labradoodles, a cross between Labrador retriever and poodle, have been trained as therapy dogs and brought into Alpha School (NJ) to help students with autism learn social skills and increase their conversational abilities.
