Naturalistic settings (as opposed to tightly controlled settings) can help children with autism learn to generalize (apply new skills to new situations).

Teaching children with autism can be hard. Teachers have to find the balance between teaching new skills and teaching children to apply the learned skills to new situations. This review article describes when it is best to focus on the new skill and when it is best to focus on applying the new skill. The authors also describe tools for school psychologists, teachers and others looking to learn more about naturalistic settings. The authors list books that describe in more detail the three most popular naturalistic therapy techniques: incidental teaching, pivotal response training, and script fading.


The Pennsylvania Verbal Behavior Project currently serves 13 children with autism. "The purpose of the PA Verbal Behavior Project is to enhance learning and communication to improve the lives of children who live with autism and their families." The Verbal Behavior Project is based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) and the analysis of verbal behavior to help children increase communication skills, social skills, self-care and learning. The project provides resources for teachers and families as they create  IEPs and educate.

A biOrb aquarium, made by Reef-One, has joined other animal therapies that Paula Kinney of CO uses for her daughter with autism. She explains that her daughter has a "sixth sense" when dealing with animals from fish to dogs. Kinney learned that "watching fish can help reduce stress and anxiety, promote relaxation and enhance learning abilities to provide healing benefits for children with autism."
