Research summaries for autism therapy: evidence-based medicine (EBM)

definition of evidence-based medicine (EBM): Medical decisions that are based entirely upon data from well-controlled and well-designed scientific studies. The more positive studies available, the stronger the evidence behind the medicine. Consequently, a few case studies are not considered to be enough scientific evidence to support a therapeutic practice as evidence-based.

Reading instruction that is performed as suggested by the National Reading Panel is likely the best approach for children with autism.

This review article describes the research that has been done on teaching reading to children with autism. Some children with autism will likely have trouble with word reading skills. Children with autism are often good rule-based or rote learners, and as a result, phonics may be easier for them than meaning-focused skills. Phonics skills such as learning sounds in words and mapping those sounds to letters and blending those sounds to form words may be the most useful approach. The authors note that research on the reading skills of children with autism is just beginning. Read more...

There are ways for small studies on social skills interventions to be included in evidence-based medical practice. This paper looked at a series of small studies on social skills interventions to see if the data from the different studies could be pooled. The goal of the authors was to be able to make a scientific conclusion about whether or not a type of therapy works, even if the therapy was only tested in a series of small studies with only a few children each. For this paper, the authors looked at published studies of peer-based social skills groups for autism.... Read more...
