Full Text	Children with autism who have feeding problems may be helped by an interdisciplinary feeding program. Feeding problems are a pattern of eating that is not normal and causes social or health problems for the patient. The purpose of this study was to see if a feeding program was able to help 46 children with autism who had feeding problems. The children (aged 3 to 12 years) in the study received intense behavior therapy and oral motor therapy. The authors found the program to be a success based upon one follow-up data point for each child. While the program was able to help the children, the authors note that these children had severe feeding issues and were part of a feeding disorders program.

Full Text	Children with autism may benefit from screening for feeding problems and treatment of any problems that exist. Children with autism often have feeding problems and these feeding problems can be severe. While feeding problems may be severe, few therapists look closely at and work on feeding problems. This review article describes the current state of the field with respect to feeding problems in children with autism. The authors suggest that all children with autism be screened for feeding problems. Behavior based interventions such as applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy may be helpful in treating feeding problems.

Full Text	Applied behavior analysis (ABA therapy) may be used to treat feeding and sleep problems that may be seen in children with autism. Many children with autism have sleeping and feeding problems. Many children with autism have rigid mealtime routines and will only eat certain foods. This article reviews treatment options for these behavior problems. ABA therapy may be quite helpful because it focuses on certain behaviors and works to change those behaviors for the better. ABA may also be useful because it focuses on behaviors that can measured and so progress can be tracked.

Full Text	Early feeding therapy may be able to improve autism in children at risk for autism. There are few articles that describe the feeding problems that are common in children with autism. This review article describes early feeding problems and failure to thrive in children who go on to have autism. The author suggests that there is a connection between growth, feeding problems, and problems with brain development. When young children have feeding problems that persist, then they may be at risk for autism. The author suggests that there is a need for a novel therapeutic approach to early feeding problems in children who may be at risk for autism.

While most experts agree that feeding problems are common with children with 3 years of age) has been designated childhood disintegration disorder. The term “autism” is usually used to describe disorders included on the autism spectrum.">autism spectrum disorder, there are still not enough studies to give a good idea of how many children with autism have feeding problems. Sensory problems likely make feeding harder, but more research needs to be done to explore sensory integration disorder as a basis of feeding problems. The authors suggest that speech therapists continue to get current training in the area of feeding, and specifically training on feeding issues in autism patients. This is because the feeding problems of children with autism appear to be distinct from the feeding problems of other children.

Many children with autism also have sleep problems, feeding problems, and GI complaints. Studies have also shown that the brains of some people with autism do not look like the guts of other people. These studies of the brains of people with autism suggest that there are basic brain problems that occur in the womb. This article describes a theory that says that autism is caused by a migraine of the gut. The author believes that this is why people with autism have so many GI complaints.

Full Text	Feeding problems should be treated as early as possible so that children can grow physically and be healthy. This article reviewed all studies published between 1994 and 2004 on the eating patterns of children with autism. Up to 89% of children with autism are picky eaters. Some children will only eat one type of food, such as fruits, or starches, or meats. These food limits can have an effect on both the health and social life of the child. Teachers, parents and doctors should teach themselves about what treatments work best for poor eating patterns.

Full Text	There is no scientific proof that special diets help children with autism. In this review article, the author: 1) summarizes basic information on autism; 2) describes popular diets used as therapies for people with autism; 3) reviews feeding behaviors that are specific to people with autism; 4) describes a reasonable dietary approach for children with autism. She begins by stating that many parents try unproven diets in hopes of helping their childrenâ??s autism. She notes that children with autism often have more feeding problems than typical children. These feeding problems are likely to last into adulthood and can be made worse by forcing a child to eat a more limited diet. She suggests that nutritionists be informed about autism in order to offer specific dietary suggestions to parents.
