definition of food allergies: The term food allergy is commonly used to describe an adverse reaction to a food. While, technically, this reaction is due to a specific type of immune response to the food in question, many people use the phrase "allergic to _____ food" to include reactions that may not be purely immunological and may not be completely directed to the food. Symptoms of food allergies can range from mild such as gut discomfort to serious such as life-threatening anaphylactic shock.

This brief review article suggests that elimination diets may improve the health and behavior of some children with autism.... Much of the rest of the article describes a research report showing that the immune responses of children with autism, when exposed to certain foods, are similar to those of children with food allergies.
