definition of Geodon (ziprasidone): Geodon® is an antipsychotic medication that may be prescribed for people with autism to help reduce hyperactivity, aggression, self-abusive behavior, temper tantrums, lability (mood swings), social withdrawal, and repetitive behaviors. Ziprasidone is currently in clinical trials to test effectiveness in children with autism. Some children have improved with treatment. Ziprasidone is indicated for schizophrenia, bipolar mania, and agitation in people with schizophrenia. Ziprasidone works as a dopamine and serotonin type 2 antagonist, and has other effects on the nervous system.

Ziprasidone may help with the symptoms of autism.

This pilot study was designed to see if the antipsychotic ziprasidone is a safe and effective treatment for behavior problems that can come with autism. The study included only 12 teenagers. Ziprasidone does appear to reduce global and specific symptoms of autism. These symptoms were measured by the researchers and the parents.
