Researchers at the Institute for Autism Research at Canisius College have found in a second study that intensive treatment (what they call Summer Max) can be effective for children with high-functioning autism. The children in the treatment group received 5 weeks of 20 minutes of skills instruction followed by 50 minutes of activity to reinforce the skills. IGNITE is a community center for young adults with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome. IGNITE provides social interaction, activities, job skills training, and educational workshops that teach life skills. Students with autism at Level Creek Elementary in Suwannee GA have gotten a new sensory room. The 20 or so kids who use the room are high-functioning with a mild autism diagnosis. Gwinnett County Public Schools divide the students with autism into four levels based on their capabilities.
