Applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy can be used to quickly teach adolescents with autism how to ask better questions.

This study was designed to see if it was possible to teach adolescents with autism to ask better questions. Six weeks of hourly question training based on applied behavior analysis (ABA) techniques resulted in better questions from all of the students. The students learned a set of rules that can be used when asking questions. The students and the coaches all thought that the questions were better after the six weeks of therapy. Seven months of social skills therapy in the school was able to help children with autism learn self-control, how to cooperate, and when to be assertive.

This study looked to see if a type of social skills training (cognitive-behavioral-ecological) can help children with autism solve social problems. The children were diagnosed with high-functioning autism and were between the ages of 7 and 11. The results agreed with a previous study and found that social problem solving improved after the social skills training. Even 12 weeks of social skills training can help children with high-functioning autism.

This study looked to see whether social skills training could help children with autism learn to communicate better. The social skills training sessions were once a week (90 minutes) for 12 weeks. The authors found that social skills training with a group of peers was helpful for children with high-functioning autism. Some children improved a lot and some children did not improve very much. Cognitive behavior therapy can be used to treat anxiety in high-functioning children with autism.

This study was designed to see if 12 weekly group sessions of psychotherapy (cognitive behavior therapy) could help with anxiety in high-functioning children with autism. This is the first such study and it found that cognitive behavior therapy was able to help treat children with autism for anxiety. Many psychologists would not think to try cognitive behavior therapy on children with autism. This study would support the idea that children with high-functioning autism know their own thoughts. The authors wonder if a more simple type of cognitive behavior therapy may be able to help lower-functioning children with autism who may also have anxiety. Read more...
