Movement therapy is a type of psychotherapy that promotes the overall well-being of the individual as well as the social integration of the individual. Movement therapy may be practiced in many different settings: private studios, mental health settings, educational settings, etc. There are many specific types of movement therapy. For example, Integrated Movement Therapy® (IMT) uses yoga-based movement. Autism movement therapy (AMT) uses sensory integration techniques, movement, music, and Positive Behavior Support (PBS) strategies to improve speech, language, social, and academic skills specifically in people with autism.

The Kindle Center is a new resource in Massachusetts where children with autism can receive social skills training, eating assistance, speech therapy, and dance therapy. In addition, their parents can receive training in order to help their children at home. The Kindle Center motto is “Independence, Progress, Friendship, Learning, Success”, skills they would like all their students to achieve. Applied behavior analysis (ABA) is the basis upon which the center is focused. Arianne Kindle says, “ABA has been proven time and time again to be an effective way to teach children new skills and to teach appropriate, alternative behaviors to stigmatizing or maladaptive behaviors.”

Jennifer Allender, a classically trained dancer, has been a special education teacher to children with autism and other disabilities over for 14 years. The Illinois school children who benefit from Ms. Allender's therapy gain physical, occupational (OT), speech, and most of all social skills. The dance play includes movement, singing, imitation, and repetition. Allender says, "What happens in class opens up a whole new world of experiences. The mirrors on the wall help them visualize things, and it's really a multi-sensory experience."
