John Hatfield, a pediatric nurse and martial arts instruction, opened Kids Action Initiative (KAI) to teach martial arts to kids on the autism spectrum. He opened KAI, in Bridgewater, MA with Maureen Hancock, a Reiki master who has also worked with kids with autism. Hatfield who has studied karate for over 40 years has seen how martial arts can help people of all ages; he explained, “There’s something magical about martial arts. Anyone who comes into a martial arts program leaves a better person, less angry, a better learner, more patient, a better worker.” Because kids with autism often have trouble communicating and being social, martial arts can work wonders.
