Most parents cope with the stress of having a child with autism by reaching out to friends as well as other people who have a child with autism.

Autism affects children as well as the families of the children. Caring for children with autism can be hard and can cause a great deal of stress within a family. This survey looked at how parents of children with autism cope with that stress. The authors conclude that nurses working with families should ask each family what the family needs, what the family is ready to learn, and what the family wants to work on. In this way nurses can help parents work through the stressors that come with having a child with autism.
