Cognitive Orientation for daily Occupational Performance (CO-OP) may help children with Asperger's Syndrome learn to generalize skills learned in therapy to help solve every day problems.

This study was designed to see if CO-OP intervention would help children with Asperger's Syndrome learn to solve every day problems. CO-OP therapy involves having each child think about ways that the skills that they learned in therapy could help them solve daily problems. This review article is written for general practitioners, pediatricians, psychiatrists, and other medical staff. It describes the best way to manage the treatment of people with autism. The authors suggest speech therapy, social skills training, school services, structured environments, occupational therapy, applied behavior analysis (ABA) therapy, and drug therapy. The authors describe several classes of drugs: stimulants, selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs), anticonvulsants, and sympatholytics (clonidine and guanfecine). Adults with autism showed improvement in certain behaviors after Snoezelen occupation therapy (OT) sessions. Snoezelen OT is a form of therapy that gives controlled sensory input (e.g., sights, sounds, etc.) during therapy to help people with autism better deal with sensory input.
